A driver is needed for the USB connection to the robot, containing the standard unique device identifiers for XV and Botvac, linking driver to device, setting mapping within Windows. While the firmware updating website has been discontinued by Neato Robotics, the links for the drivers for Windows are still active Dec. 2015:

--unsigned driver in Windows 8.1 requires over-riding prohibition globally in advanced settings; many instructions on the web.
Ignore notices and local options, misleading.

Neato USB Programmers Manual (English)

The Neato Control Program uses these commands with a graphical user interface (GUI).
A terminal emulator program can be also be used with the commands in text mode.
Neato echos all characters back and performs backspace editing.

​February 2019 the USB driver installation files are no longer available at the Neato Robotics website through known links; Vowerk has such drivers as well but I have not used.

The driver installation files are now posted attachments at RobotReviews.com at post
