Powerbot Brush Lubrication

Messagepar glnc222 » Ven 13 Oct 2017 19:01

After running the Powerbot 150 hours (300 times over two years) the brush made rattling noise. The plastic drive gear with brush socket in a wide bushing required some silicone lubricant in the bushing gone dry. Requires opening the case. My 9000 series model has navigated perfectly for two years and over 300 runs. I don't expect that system to be any different in the 7000 series. The same sort of camera system is now used by Roomba, LG, Dyson, Bosch, and Electrolux besides Samsung. The lidar systems are a dozen years old, ancient history in electronics. The ever advancing capacity of cpu's and cheaper cameras makes the difference.

I highly recommend the Samsung Powerbot for the quality of electronics construction. There are no reports of defective components you see on other brands, defective circuit boards. They have a reputation in TV's etc. to protect. Major electronics supplier vs robot specialist. They make many of the components used themselves, and their largest business is supplying such components to other companies. They also supply a full line of spare parts integrated into their entire appliance product service operation, at samsungparts.com, like standard appliance support. Even service manuals are available, not just user guides.

The one product to avoid imho, is the Virtual Guard IR optical boundary system, inherited from the older Navibot line, which I find poorly designed and hard to use
(however well constructed). No need to pay extra for it. I recently added mag strip detection to my 9250 to replace it, with hobby electronics work. See robotreviews.com hacking forum.

Was posted here earlier thread http://www.kelrobot.fr/forum/powerbot-mag-strip-boundary-addition-t3869.html

Are you making the addition to your own Powerbot? Lot of readers, no makers posting. Advise if you need help with parts or construction.
Pictures show everything needed, without text comments.

I heard from one user in Italy who also had the strange firmware update disabling the Virtual Guard. Most models are not equipped with the Guards.

I am not sure lubrication was the noise problem with the brush. There was also hard debris coating needing scraping to remove, hits the rubber blades.
Expensive robot but it is durable, seems to last a long time compared to others with lots of repair questions.

For special experiments with the Powerbot 9000 see robotreviews thread on the 9000 series (site down temporarilly, can't get the URL).

I agree the hard debris build up is the source of noise. It has been observed on other brands of robots as well.

finally looked at the VR7000 in Saturn, they had several models including a self-cleaning brush model. What I noticed visually and what was not showed or written on the internet is that in the brush cover of this model, exactly the bottom of each of the "spans" (which prevent pulling-in cables) is metal exactly matched and engraved to the stems in the same place on the brush, and also at both ends of the brush. The hairs in the winding are moved to these places, and they are pulled by force so that they must tear and go inwards, into the center of the brush and into the dustbin. Visually it looks simple and innovative in my opinion, interesting whether it will prove effective in practice. Perhaps it is the first solution that once and for all closes the problem of hair getting into the gear and bearings.

Brush mad clicking noise after powerbot 150 hours. The bushing needed some lubricant to run smoothly.

The 7000 series of robot vacuums, like the 9000 series you mentioned, should have a similar level of navigation capability. While I don't have specific information about the 7000 series, it's reasonable to expect that Samsung (and other brands you mentioned) would continue to incorporate reliable navigation systems in their newer models.

It's worth noting that technological advancements can lead to more refined navigation algorithms, better obstacle detection, improved mapping capabilities, and enhanced overall performance. So, while the underlying lidar technology may have been around for some time, the implementation and optimization of these systems can still make a significant difference in the performance and efficiency of robot vacuums.
